Plantation Alliance

About this tour

After the abolition of Slavery, indentured laborers from China, India and Indonesia were brought to Suriname. At Alliance the Hindustani and Javanese culture is still strongly present. The former sugar plantation is now one of Suriname’s greatest citrus groves. Here, you will be able to taste the delicious sweet oranges while being led around the historic plantation. You will have the opportunity to meet local Javanese and Hindustani people and learn about their traditions and way of life. The locals are friendly and giving the plantation a welcoming character.

Tips:

  • Wear comfortable footwear: The plantation may have uneven ground, so sturdy, comfortable shoes are recommended for walking around.
  • Bring Sunscreen & Hat: The tour is likely to take place outdoors, so protect yourself from the sun with sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses.
  • Stay Hydrated: Bring a water bottle to keep cool, especially if the tour is in the afternoon heat.
  • Bring a Camera: Capture the beautiful scenery, the lush citrus groves, and the friendly faces of the locals. It’s an opportunity for both stunning landscapes and cultural moments.
  • Engage with Locals: The locals are welcoming and proud of their heritage. Take the time to interact, learn about their customs, and appreciate their hospitality.
  • Prepare for a Relaxed Pace: The tour is likely to be laidback and informative, so take it slow, enjoy the surroundings, and immerse yourself in the history.
  • Wear Light Clothing: In the warm climate, breathable clothing will keep you comfortable throughout the tour.
