Museum Bakkie Tour

About this tour

The Museum Bakkie is located in Commewijne’s eastern district. Bakkie is the last inhabited plantation on the right bank of the Commewijne river. Marsha Mormon and Bas Spek founded Museum Bakkie. Marsha, who was born in the Netherlands, traveled to Suriname in search of her roots and discovered the family plantation Bakkie, to which she turned out to be heir. The Museum’s collection began with excavations in the Warappakreek, a canal that connects the Commewijne river to the Atlantic Ocean, and many historical masterpieces have since been added. Museum Bakkie houses one of Suriname’s most unique private collections, including numerous original books, letters, maps, and artifacts, many of which are not available elsewhere in the country. The trip to Museum Bakkie currently is one of the best-rated day trips in the whole of Suriname.
