About this tour
Explore the beautiful wetlands of the coastal area during the wetland boat excursion. The tour starts at the village Johan and Margaretha. From here, you will leave for the photogenic wetlands in small fishing boats, through open waters and narrow passages in the mangrove trees. The high stilt roots of the white, black and red mangrove trees form an imposing labyrinth. During the journey, the guide will tell you many interesting facts about the swamp and its beautiful flora and fauna. The wetlands are home to hundreds of bird species such as the scarlet ibis, which derives its color from the shrimp it eats, the heron and the crab-eating eagle. You can also see caimans, capybaras and ocelots.
The highlight of the tour is a visit to the expansive Matapica Beach, offering a breathtaking view of the Atlantic Ocean. Experience the unique beauty of this relatively forgotten part of Suriname as the sun slowly sets over the ocean.
For those seeking a bit more adventure, an optional Caiman Tour is available: During the return journey, we move quietly through the darkening waters in search of caimans hiding among the vegetation.
Tips:
- Dress for Comfort: Lightweight, breathable clothing is ideal for the humid environment. Long sleeves and pants can help protect against insects and the sun. Donāt forget sunscreen.
- Insect Repellent: Apply insect repellent before the tour to protect against mosquitoes, especially when passing through mangrove areas.
- Bring Binoculars: A good pair of binoculars will enhance your experience, helping you spot birds like the scarlet ibis, herons, and the elusive crab-eating eagle.
- Camera with Zoom: A camera with a zoom lens is perfect for capturing wildlife from a distance without disturbing the animals.
- Stay Quiet for Wildlife Spotting: Keep noise to a minimum to increase your chances of seeing shy creatures like ocelots, caimans, and capybaras.
- Be Ready for Sudden Sightings: Wildlife can appear unexpectedly, so keep your camera and binoculars within easy reach.
