About this tour

If you visit Commewijne between February and July, the sea turtle excursion should definitely be on your bucket list. Of the seven species worldwide, four species of sea turtles come to lay their eggs in the coastal areas of Suriname. Every year, the giant sea turtles find their way back to this area after a long, risky journey. You can watch this natural phenomenon up close. In the afternoon we board the boat towards Braamspunt, where we arrive just in time to catch the sun setting in the Atlantic Ocean. On the beach of Braamspunt, you will be able to spot the giant turtles in the light of the moon. Many have deemed the tour an unforgettable experience.

Tips:

  • Wear dark Comfortable Clothing: it’s best to wear dark colors like black, navy blue, or dark green. (Turtles are sensitive to light, especially while nesting. Bright colors can disturb them).
  • Bring a jacket: for cooler evening temperatures.
  • Bring Insect Repellent: The coastal areas can have mosquitoes, especially during sunset, so a good insect repellent is essential.
  • Respect the Wildlife: Keep a safe distance from the turtles, avoid touching them, and follow the guide’s instructions to ensure a safe experience for both you and the turtles.
  • Capture the Moment Mindfully: Flash photography is not allowed as it can disorient the turtles. Use low-light settings or enjoy the moment without the camera.
  • Bring a Beach Towel or Mat: For comfort while sitting on the sand during the tour, a towel or mat can be helpful.
