What makes this trail special is that the story is told through the voice of Boni’s mother, Awitja. She takes you from Africa to Suriname and into the time of slavery and resistance. This is the only trail in Suriname that uses audio fragments, interactive stations, and storytelling to share this history.

2. Visit the Maasdamme Diorama

At Frederiksdorp, you can also visit the exhibition “Het Leven en Werken in Onvrijheid” (Life and Labor in Bondage). The highlight is a 5.5-meter-long diorama / miniature scene made by artist Rita Maasdamme. It shows daily life on a plantation during slavery, in great detail. Every small figure has a name, a face, and a story showing that even in hard times, people kept their identity and strength.

At the village of Johan en Margaretha, you can join a fun and tasty cooking workshop. With the kind and experienced Mrs. Dipai, you’ll learn how to make dishes like roti from scratch. She shares cooking tips, family stories, and the history behind Surinamese food.

After cooking, you’ll sit outside and enjoy the meal you made, with some drinks and a great view.

4. Go Dolphin Spotting

Take a boat trip along the Suriname and Commewijne rivers and try to spot the Profusu dolphins the local name for these friendly animals. These dolphins are playful and often swim close to the boat. Some boatmen even play music to get their attention!
